First time! Chinese navy recaptures foreign cargo ships from Somali pirates
[Global Times-global network reporter Guo Yuandan] on April 9, the Chinese military announced that the Chinese navy rescued a hijacked foreign cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden. Military sources told the Global Times that the increase of China’s military power is a good news, not a threat, for maintaining regional and world peace and stability.
In the early morning of April 9, local time, the 25th batch of Chinese escort formation, which was carrying out escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and the waters of Somalia, successfully rescued the Tuvaluan OS35 cargo ship hijacked by pirates. The cargo ship was hijacked by pirates in the northwest waters of Socotra island in the Gulf of Aden. The number of pirates was unknown. One pirate small boat berthed cargo ship. In the early morning of the 9th, 16 Chinese special warfare players boarded OS35 on small boat and rescued 19 crew members from the safety cabin.
This is the first time that the Chinese navy has rescued foreign ships attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Aden and the waters of Somalia. According to the news draft of the Chinese Navy, as of April 9, the Chinese naval escort formation rescued two ships attacked by pirates boarding ships in the Gulf of Aden and the waters of Somalia.
According to public reports, another rescue of ships attacked by pirates was “the successful rescue of taiankou, a Chinese merchant ship attacked by pirates”. The rescue incident occurred in November 2010.
At that time, the Chinese special transport ship “taiankou” was attacked by a pirate ship, four pirates had boarded the ship, and the crew of the merchant ship was unknown. Xuzhou, a Chinese warship, rushed to the sea area where the hijacked ship was successfully rescued.
A military official told the Global Times on the 9th that this meant that the Gulf of Aden was still unsafe and the threat of pirates to the sea remained. Warships of various countries carrying out anti-piracy in this sea area still face the provocation of pirates, and the task of protecting the lives and property of passing ships and personnel is still significant.
Zhang Junshe, a researcher at the Naval Military Academic Research Institute, said in an interview with Global Times on the 9th that pirates hijacked ships frequently in the waters of the Gulf of Aden in recent period, which showed that it was necessary for the international community to continue in the Gulf of Aden, escort the waters of Somalia. At the same time, it also shows that with the growth of China’s military power, the Chinese army’s ability to provide goods of public security to the international community is increasing. The increase of China’s military power is a blessing rather than a threat to maintaining regional and world peace and stability. Zhang Junshe said that the first batch of escort troops sent by the Chinese Navy in 2008 had completed more than 6,000 ship escort missions so far, among which more than half of the ships from foreign countries and international organizations such as the World Food Programme, this shows that China has assumed more and more international responsibilities and obligations.
