Manned submersible and 96 scientific examiners will sail from Sanya in the near future and go to the South China Sea investigation area to carry out scientific investigation.
According to reports, the second leg of the “Jiaolong” shoulders dual scientific goals. First of all, it is to carry out the task of selecting the sea test area of the 1000-meter multi-metal nodule collection system in the northern South China Sea to obtain the seabed geology, abyssal environment parameters and so on required by the multi-metal nodule mining test project, carry out the collection of relevant environmental basic data of selected regions, provide support for the construction of marine mining environment evaluation system, and provide support for China to participate in the formulation of international rules related to international seabed mining in the future, strive for international discourse power and lay the foundation.
Secondly, it is to obtain high-precision topographic and geomorphological data, rocks, organisms and other samples of the northern margin of the South China Sea ocean-land transition zone and the heritage expansion Center, in order to deeply study the community composition of microorganisms and macrofauna in this region, the distribution law and the frontier scientific issues such as the initial lithosphere cracking process in the South China Sea, the deep mechanism of the seabed expansion and the geological process after expansion provide solid support.
According to reports, the second generation aquanaut will be the main driver of all dive missions in this segment. Through the main driving practical training in the first leg, the second batch of 6 manned submersible internship aquanaut independently selected and trained by China have withstood the test of complex environment in hydrothermal areas and successfully completed the investigation task, it has the ability to independently drive submersible to carry out underwater operations. In the second leg, facing the new working environment and investigation tasks, the second batch of internship aquanaut will continue to carry out a new round of independent driving operations to further improve their underwater operation skills.
